Josmer Volmy “Jozy” Altidore (born November 6, 1989)^[4] is an American soccer player currently playing for Bursaspor, on loan from Villarreal CF, in the Spanish Primera Liga, and for the United States national team. Altidore made his professional debut in 2006 at the age of 16 with the New York Red Bulls. In the middle of his third season with New York, in 2008, he made a transfer to his current club, Villareal. Since joining Villareal, he has left on two loan stints – with Spanish Segunda División club Xerez in February–May 2009 and with English Premier League club Hull City for the entire 2009–10 season. Altidore has represented the United States on various levels of international competition, featuring for the United States U-17 team at the 2005 FIFA U-17 World Championship, U-20 team at the 2007 FIFA U-20 World Cup, the U-23 team at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, and the senior national team at the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup and 2010 FIFA World Cup.

We are pleased to have Mauricio de Sousa and his famous comic, Monica’s Gang – Turma de Monica” as part of Nubia Rose International magazine. Mauricio’s message of joy, which comes from the sensitivity of an artist who trusts in the future and in people beyond all social, ideological or geographical barriers, is intended for the most demanding public in the world: children.

Brazilian cartoonist Mauricio de Sousa’s artistry and business acumen have created a dynamic enterprise that produces a steady stream of newspaper strips and Sunday pages, comic and activity books, hardcover storybooks, animation, website and social campaigns. With more than 150 artists, Mauricio de Sousa Productions (MSP) is the fourth largest art studio in the world.

His publishing business boasts a 85 percent share of the children’s market in Brazil. The comics and books featuring Mauricio’s characters have been among the top 11 children’s titles in Brazil for many years, reaching 1 billion comics and books published. Mauricio’s work has been translated into as many as 15 languages in 40 countries. The company also manages a large licensing operation with 3,500 licensed products.

Mauricio got his start while working as a journalist in 1959 and publishing his first comic strip in the newspaper Folha de Sao Paulo. A flow of comic characters followed, including Monica’s Gang, Chuck Billy ‘n’ Folks, Horacio’s World, Tina & Pals, Lionel’s Kingdom, Bug-a-Booo, the Amazonics, Pele and most recently, Ronaldinho Gaucho.

In May 2006, Mauricio introduced his new comic strip, Ronaldinho Gaucho, based on the football star dubbed the best soccer player on earth in 2004 and 2005.  Mauricio has already taken Ronaldinho to star status in publishing, licensing, syndication by UPS and social campaigns. Even an animated TV series is in the works.

Mauricio’s awards and recognitions are numerous. His artistic talent has been recognized with the “Oscar” of the cartoon world, the prestigious Yellow Kid award.

The Brazilian postal service issued four series of stamps featuring the Mauricio’s characters: The United Nations Summit on the Environment; the 150th anniversary of the first Brazilian stamp; Children and Citizenship; and the Olympic Games.

His public service work has earned him both domestic and international recognition. He has received the Brazilian presidential medal of honor for his promotion of human rights and a “Champion of Health in the Americas” by the United Nations World Health Organization’s Pan American office. He received the Diploma of Merit for the Valorization of Life, the Brazilian Cultural Merit Medal and the Sergio Vieira de Mello U.N. Peace Maker Gold medal. As a trustee of Pacem in Terris Institute, which awards U.S. scholarships to students from countries torn by war, Mauricio received a medal from Pope John Paul II.

The character Monica received the title of  Ambassador of Tourism and recently Ambassador of Culture in Brazil. Mauricio de Sousa received the title of ” Writer for Children” from Unicef and his character Monica is the first toon character to become Ambassador for UNICEF.

Mauricio was born in Santa Izabel, São Paulo, Brazil on October 27, 1935. His parents, Antonio Mauricio and Petronilha de Sousa, both broadcasters, poets and composers, provided the background for his talent in art and creativity. In all his work, Mauricio draws on his experience as the father of 10 children and his strong beliefs about the responsibilities of parenting.

As premiações de Mauricio são inúmeras. Seu talento artístico foi reconhecido com o “Oscar” do mundo das histórias em quadrinhos, o consagrado Prêmio Yellow Kid.

O serviço postal brasileiro emitiu quatro série de selos exibindo os personagens de Maurício: Conferência das Nações Unidas sobre o Meio Ambiente, o 150º Aniversário do Primeiro Selo Brasileiro, Crianças e Cidadania e Jogos Olímpicos.

Seu trabalho como cidadão público lhe valeu reconhecimento no Brasil e internacionalmente. Ele recebeu a medalha de honra presidencial brasileira por sua promoção dos direitos humanos e “Campeão da Saúde nas Américas” pela filial pan-americana da Organização Mundial de Saúde das Nações Unidas. Ele recebeu o diploma de Mérito pela Valorização da Vida, Mérito Cultural Brasileiro e foi condecorado com a medalha de ouro Sérgio Vieira de Mello da Missão de Paz da ONU. Como administrador do Pacem in Terris Institute, que propicia bolsa de estudos nos Estados Unidos para estudantes de países devastados pela guerra, Maurício recebeu uma medalha das mãos do Papa João Paulo II.

A personagem Mônica recebeu o título de Embaixadora do Turismo e, recentemente, foi agraciada com o título de Embaixadora da Cultura no Brasil. Maurício de Sousa recebeu o título de “Escritor para Crianças” da UNICEF e sua personagem, Mônica, é a primeira personagem de revista em quadrinhos a se tornar Embaixadora da UNICEF.
