A Very Down To Earth Conversation With South Florida’s Brazilian Broadcaster .

Marcos Cesar de Oliveira was born in Sao Paulo, Brazil, in 1962. He has lived in the USA for 30 years. He has graduated from class of 1985 with a bachelor’s degree in Mass Communications from the University of Massachusetts, at Amherst. Throughout the years, Marcos has become the most prominent Brazilian sports announcer in the USA. He has worked for the Giants Fox, FX, ESPN International, HBO, MGM, and TNT. He also produced, edited, and presented the “Marcos Cesar Show”, which was broadcasted on public station WLRN, in South Florida, for 6 consecutive years. Marcos is the owner of the Brazilian Paper and Radio Brazil.  Marcos Cesar is an icon of the Brazilian Media in Florida.

NR.: Tell us about your experience on television:

“Marcos Cesar Show” wasn’t the first Brazilian TV show in the US. But, it certainly wrote a separate chapter in the history of Brazilian TV, way before the arrival of Global International here. Together with Luqui Tv, Claudio Magnavita, Alvaro Sá, BR2, Arnon Dantas, and the deceased Ferreira Neto (my first TV mentor), we irrigated the soil for so many of the international Brazilian channels of today”.

NR.: Do you consider yourself a journalist, a commentator, an announcer, businessman, editor, TV host, radio personality, or what?

“My first working tool wasn’t a microphone, but a vacuum cleaner. I worked at a large cleaning company in Boston, managed by some Portuguese businessmen. No body used the vacuum better than me. I somehow knew that we need to be dedicated to work, even when we didn’t like the job. We must graduate from that job before we are given new working experiences”.

“I am almost fifty, and half of my life has been spent in the Media. I am very grateful for having found my true profession and for having received so many professional opportunities, since 1983, when I was paid to speak on radio for the first time, for a Portuguese AM station, in Ludlow, MA. But working on television is what I love the most.”

NR.: So you started on the radio?

“Actually, I started at home, announcing ‘Jogos de Botão’ (toy commonly found in Brazil, consisted of a table-type soccer game). Then, I started recording radio shows from a portable cassette recorder that my aunt in the US gave me. Next, came the ‘3 in 1’ player/recorder, and I started imitating famous soccer announcers, like Fiori Gigliotti, and Osmar Santos. Much later, in 1981, on the campus radio at the University of Massachusetts, I could finally exteriorize my gift.

NR.: What about the new decade?

“Since I started reading the Seicho-No-Ie books of Master Matsaharu Taniguchi, 2 years ago, I came to believe that the future will always be better, and that the bad doesn’t exist. I think that what happened in Haiti will reflect throughout the next decade: people helping people, despite of religious, cultural, or racial differences. We must understand that we are part of the same race and that only when each one of us is happy, everyone will be happy”.

“For the Brazilians in America, I think that we’ll have many happy days in front of us. We can use the experiences and the money we make here to actively participate in this new Brazil.

Florida is going to grow again with the international investments, mainly from Brazil. From any direction, I see Brazil on top in the next 10 years.”

NR.: A message?

“Trust, love, and live the moment with a lot of passion and gratitude. Feed your soul with good reading, and develop you qualities without fear”.

Marcos Cesar de Oliveira é paulistano, nascido em 1962 e vive há 30 anos na América. Formou-se em Comunicações de Massa em 1985, na Universidade de Massachusetts, em Amherst, e desde então tem se transformado no mais ativo jornalista esportivo brasileiro nos EUA, com um currículo invejável de conquistas junto às mais importantes emissoras norte-americanas, entre elas PSN, Fox, FX, ESPN, HBO, MGM, e TNT. Marcos ainda traz consigo 6 anos de experiência produzindo, editando, e apresentando o seu próprio show, que quase diariamente era apresentado na gigante WLRN de Miami nos anos 90, com cobertura de West Palm Beach à Key West, em sinal aberto. Pelo seu trabalho frente ao Brazilian Paper, ao Marcos Cesar Show, e à Rádio Brasil, é que Marcos Cesar tornou-se também um ícone da mídia brasileira na Flórida.

NR.: Fale sobre a sua experiência na televisão:

“O Marcos Cesar Show não foi o primeiro, mas certamente escreveu um capítulo importante da tv brasileira local, num período anterior à chegada da Globo Internacional. Junto com a Luqui TV, Claudio Magnavita, o Álvaro Sá, o Arnon Dantas, e o falecido Ferreira Neto (meu eterno mestre), semeamos o caminho para as tantas emissoras internacionais que invadem nossas casas hoje em dia”.

NR.: Você se considera mais jornalista, comentarista, narrador, empreendedor, radialista,  editor, apresentador de televisão, produtor de eventos, ou o quê?

“Estou chegando aos 50 anos, e metade da minha vida tem sido na mídia. Sou genuinamente grato por ter encontrado a profissão certa, e ter recebido tantas oportunidades como as que tenho tido desde 1983, quando fui pago para falar na rádio pela primeira vez, numa estação portuguesa AM, em Ludlow, MA. A televisão, no entanto, é o que eu mais amo.”

NR.: Foi na rádio que você começou?

“Eu comecei mesmo foi em casa, narrando jogos de botão. Daí eu passei a gravar programas inventados de rádio num gravador portátil que uma tia dos EUA me deu de presente. Daí veio o 3 em 1, e eu comecei a imitar os locutores de futebol, principalmente o Fiori Giglioti e o Osmar Santos. Anos mais tarde, em 1981, na rádio do campus universitário, foi que eu finalmente pude exteriorizar, pela primeira vez, o dom de falar para uma audiência eletrônica”.

NR.: E a nova década?

“Desde que comecei a ler os livros do Mestre japonês da Seicho-No-Ie, Matsaharu Tanaguchi, há dois anos, que eu passei a acreditar que o futuro vai ser sempre melhor, e que não há nada real a não ser o Bem. Acho que o que aconteceu no Haiti reflete muito aquilo que vai acontecer daqui prá frente: as nações dando as mãos para aliviar o sofrimento humano em todos os cantos do planeta. Está na hora de haver uma irmandade real no mundo, sem segregações culturais, raciais, ou religiosas. Temos que compreender que somos uma raça só, irmãos entre si, e que só quando todos estiverem bem, que o mundo todo será feliz”.

“Na comunicação e na tecnologia, estamos prestes a ver aquilo que o cinema nos projetou há anos; conquistas interplanetárias e um mundo espacial, em busca de novos recursos naturais para preservar os existentes na Terra. Também acho que teremos uma maior conscientização sobre a super-população do planeta. Para o Brasil, acho que teremos o que nos é de direito há muito tempo: que as nossas riquezas se transfiram também ao nosso povo e às nossas cidades”.

“Para os brasileiros na América, acho que teremos anos muito felizes pela frente, pois o aprendizado e o dinheiro que ganhamos aqui nos serão de muita valia numa provável volta ao Brasil, que carece de crescimento e da experiência dos seus cidadãos que viveram no exterior nas duas últimas décadas. Sei que com a chegada do óleo do pré-sal, da Copa do Mundo de 2014, e das Olimpíadas de 2016, o Brasil não para mais de crescer.

Acho também que aqui no sul da Flórida, haverá uma nova onde de investimentos estrangeiros, principalmente do Brasil. É um ótimo momento de compra de imóveis para quem tem liquidez. Em qualquer direção que olho, vejo o Brasil nas primeiras posições nos próximos 10 anos”.

“Confiem, amem, e vivam o momento atual com paixão e agradecimento. Procurem alimentar o espírito com boas leituras, e  desenvolvam suas qualidades sem medo”.

A Very down to Earth conversation with South Florida’s Brazilian Community Doctor

Dr. Neri Franzon was born in a city called Santa Cecília, located in the State of Santa Catarina which is just south of Brazil. Dr. Franzon attended primary school in Santa Cecília and then later moved to Lages where he attended Elementary and High school.

In preparation for University in Brazil, Franzon completed Medicine Vestibular, (a test similar to the SAT in the States) in Florianópolis. In 1974 he moved to the Federal University of Santa Catarina, where studied for 6 years. Dr. Franzon graduated in 1982 and practiced General Medicine in Porto Alegre, Brazil. In 1988 he moved to America and today Dr. Franzon is the most successful doctor in the Brazilian Community in South Florida. Dr. Franzon’s office is located at 4390 N. Federal Hwwy., Ste. 101 Fort Lauderdale, FL

and he attends to 60 to 80 people per day!

Dr. Franzon, tell us how did you decide to become a doctor.

Well, I have always liked subjects related to biology and chemistry and always felt the need to help people in many ways, so I decided to become a doctor. This way I could combine my love of science with helping others.

Tell us about your Doctor’s Office in Fort Lauderdale.

Yes, in 1984 I partnered with two American doctors, but I found that I was handling everything in the clinic myself. I decided to venture out on my own and now my doctor’s office in Fort Lauderdale is very successful, assisting to an average of 60 to 80 people per day.

Dr. Franzon practices medicine in the Brazilian way.

What are the most common cases at your Clinic?

I am a traditional family physician. The common cases I see are sore throat, earache, bronchitis, urinary tract infections and gynecological problems. I also perform minor surgeries such as wart removal, nails, physicianpsias cancer etc. There are a lot of cases of accidents, such as cuts and bruises from falling.

 And now we also have Botox and Juvederm available.

Dr. Franzon- Are you happy where you are now?  

Yes, everything is a 100% all right! Business and medicine are well, even with the economy doing bad to everyone. We try to help the community by doing discounts and providing some services for free.

Did you realize you’re the American Dream?

I can say yes. When I came to America I wanted to do something different, like have an adventure and work in another country.  Obviously, being in the United States would give the opportunity to conquer the success in business and careers. The medicine here is excellent. 

Do you have a dream that you still wish to come true?

Yes, obviously what makes life sweet and interesting is to progress, so I still have lots of things to accomplish in the medicine business for the Brazilian community. I want the personal satisfaction to help people to be in good health. So I still have a dream to make more people happy.

Do you think you will ever go back to Brazil to live?

No, because I am so adapted to the American lifestyle that if I go back to live in Brazil it would be very difficult to adapt, especially in the medicine business.

What do you like to do on your free time?

I like to play Racquetball, tennis … obviously at night and on the weekends. I like to attend social events, diners, concerts and of course “Um Churrasquinho” always comes on hand.

How do you like being such a famous Doctor in South Florida?

 Being famous is all a result of very hard work. Because I enjoy practicing so much  it feels like I am not working, so this way it the results of your hard work is a well done job and you get recognition from the Brazilian community. Everything I do I try to do 100% right; I am dedicated to medicine 24/7.

Do you feel lonely sometimes?

 I learned how to live alone and well. I have been independent since I was a little boy, so obviously the answer is no. We never know about the future, lots of things will probably happen in my social life.

Are you planning on going to Brazil for the World Cup 2014 or the Olympics 2016?

No, I won’t go for the World Cup 2014 or for the Olympics 2016, since I already have had the experience of going to both events in the past.
